Anzac Day 2013 Commemorated in Belgium

Ambassador Lewis delivers the Anzac Day address during the Dawn Service at Buttes New British Cemetery, Polygon Wood, Zonnebeke

The Australian Embassy, in collaboration with local municipalities and the New Zealand Embassy, organised a program of commemorations in Belgium on Anzac Day. Some four hundred people, many school-age students from Australia, attended the Dawn Service at Buttes New British Cemetery, Polygon Wood. Services were also held at Tyne Cot Cemetery, the Menin Gate in Ieper/Ypres and Toronto Avenue Cemetery in Ploegsteert. At several of the services, the participating public were invited to place a small timber poppy cross on the grave of a fallen Anzac. The crosses, prepared by volunteers from the Sons of the British Empire and the Family and Friends of the First AIF, carried messages from Australian school children written during their visits to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The Embassy expresses its appreciation for the support and efforts of the communities of Zonnebeke, Ieper/Ypres and Comines-Warneton.
